Abstract: Chicken is an important animal modal for studying all sorts of biological problems due to its unique biological features. The two strains, egg laying (layer) and meat production (Broiler) which were generated from selective breeding, come to be ideal models for understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying different phenotypes. The chicken Genome Project provides large amount of information for the research work with chicken as the model. This review summaries the development of the Chicken Genome Project, as well as the strategies that research for the quantitative traits of different chicken strains using the information of chicken genome. And we also elucidate the perspective of the developmental and genetic research work assisted by the chicken genome information and with chicken as the animal modal.
